Herne Bay’s reward for knocking out London & South East Regional side Crawley Wasps is a visit to their big rivals, Long Lane, in the next round of the FAW Cup.

Bay, who won 1-0 at Crawley, are currently top of the South East Counties Women’s Premier League, three places above Long Lane, with whom they were promoted last season.

Missing out on the league title to the Londoners – whom they beat 7-0 and 2-0 during the season – still rankles with the Kent club – it denied them a second successive trophy treble.

But they have already won 4-3 this season at the Londoners’ home and after yesterday’s victory, they will be confident of extending their club-record run in the FAW Cup.

Carshalton Athletic, who have made such an impressive start to life in the London & South East league, face another step up in the 3rd Qualifying Round, when they visit Enfield Town, from the next tier up, after beating Maidstone United 5-2 yesterday.

Fellow L&SERWL side Eastbourne Town, who beat Parkwood Rangers 3-1 yesterday, will host FAW Premier League Division One South West side Gosport Borough in the next round.

Given Gosport’s miserable start to life at a higher level and their current injury crisis, Eastbourne will rarely have a better chance of a cup upset.

AFC Wimbledon‘s development side, who beat Dartford Royals 3-0 in qualifying round 2, have a local derby at FAWPL Division One South East side Crystal Palace.

With the introduction of the regional Premier League clubs at this stage, there is still plenty of local interest in the competition, although the teams from the top tier of the women’s winter pyramid are not yet involved.

Chichester City are safely through to the first round proper after being given a bye, along with Bedford.
