What a difference a game makes. The spoils were shared in the double-header between two local rivals in challenging conditions, each winning one of the matches.

Haywards Heath were fairly consistent throughout the two games, their success based on a solid defence and the twin attacking threat of Katie Harding and Keeley Wheatley.

Contrastingly, Wivelsfield went from one extreme to the other, wasting the first half of the opening encounter as they struggled to get to grips with the blustery conditions and artificial surface, but then building on the confidence that flooded back as they played their more familiar passing game. Chichester continued their relentless march to the Premier Division with an emphatic 7-1 victory over a ring-rusty Wivelsfield Green at Chichester College.

The SECWL Division One West front-runners stretched their lead to 19 points – an almost unbridgeable gap, with less than a third of the season still to play.

But the gulf that really showed was the one between their superbly drilled side and the rest of the league.

Wivelsfield, currently third, performed admirably in their first competitive game for two months, and are one of the division’s stand-out sides – after Chichester. Continue reading
